Latest in the dreaded journey

I have had my dreads in for approx 4 weeks now and I am still loving them. The ends have loosened off a bit from the washing but I just back comb them and palm roll them. They are so much more fluffy now and there are little loops forming which is very cool as I’ve been informed that is part of the locking up process. They were of course made using back comb and crochet hook so much of the locking up and shrinkage will have been done by the crochet hook.

Here’s the latest shot of my dreads.

Latest ink work done

So a little break from the dreaded journey to let you know what’s been happening with my sleeve. I had a bit of a break from work done on my arm as Esme was completely booked up. So the first chance I got when her book opened again I booked myself in for every 2 weeks up to mid October. I wasn’t going to wait 2 months again.

My arm looked like this up to this morning.

This is the tattoo which has given rise to so much ire amongst many of my patients. Bizarre huh. Nevermind.

So today I popped along to see Esme to get a wee bit more work done. I won’t show you the after results as my arm ballooned so badly. I appear to have a bit of a reaction to the red and dark purple ink. Sucks eh. How people are going to react to the latest work I don’t know. 😉

Racism at work

Recently at work I had a man tell me I couldn’t understand him because I was bloody Irish. This was after being informed of how disgusting I was due to having tattoos. I must admit that I have had others tell me how they feel about my tattoos and on the whole the comments have been positive. These comments knocked me though. I haven’t been racially abused in a long time and believe me I have been attacked before for being Irish. The early 90’s were not a good time to be Irish in England. Suffice to say an incident report was submitted. But it doesn’t really cut it, does it? I mean the comments may mean nothing to him but to me they were a personal attack.

Two weeks into my dreaded journey

So it’s now 2 weeks and I have washed them twice. The itch has definitely decreased and I’ve noticed they’re becoming a bit fluffier and it’s much easier to sleep in them. But I found that when I’m in bed it’s often easier to tie them up into a top knot as they do slap my other half in the face. 😀

I bloody love them. 🙂

Dreadlock prep

I have decided to finally get my hair dreaded. I discussed it with my partner as he has mentioned in the past how he wasn’t a fan. I asked why and it was just down to that myth that dreads had to be kept dirty. So I pointed him in the direction of the vlogger Lazy Dreads who has an amazing number of videos dispelling myths about dreads.

So now I have booked myself in with Angie from DreadEndz to get my hair done tomorrow. I am so bloody excited. I have wanted proper dreads for years. I will post a picture tomorrow when they’re done.

Tattoos and hypocrisy

I had a patient last weekend announce loudly to the ward how little she thought of tattoos and especially women who had them – she had seen a young girl walk past sporting some ink work. I had my back turned to her and removed the tubular bandage from my arm which I had on as I had more work done on my sleeve the day before, and when handing her her drugs I watched the horror and realisation on her face. I didn’t have to say a thing. That woman was not so vocal for the rest of the shift. But it must have been a weekend for the tattoo haters. An agency nurse decided to tell me how I was wasting my money on this dreadful habit I would live to regret. 😡 The hypocrisy of an agency nurse telling me about wasting money didn’t escape me.
